Week 5 ~ “shadows” Eye Candy

lifein52b_week4This week is a favorite for sure. So many stunning images, it is hard to choose just a select few. Week 5’s theme was “shadows”. There were so many ways to interpret this theme and you all definitely brought some amazing images to the table. As mentioned last week, this month we are going to do things a little different. We will still have our normal “eye candy”, but we will also have 4 images that were chosen as “best of the best” with the reasoning behind the choice. We will continue this throughout the month of February. (and maybe more if you all like this direction) Let’s get started with all these amazing photographs:

1stplace    …………………………………

This image is just fantastic. One, most probably don’t know that balloons show color in their shadows, so thanks to Emily for sharing that with us. Two, the setting and placement of this photo is great. The lighting is perfect on the balloons and the little boy standing in the window’s shadow is just right. Also, love how you can tell how happy the little boy is, even in his shadow. The colors are bright, yet moody, and the photo really draws you in. Congratulations Emily on a brilliant submission.

One of my favorite discoveries since falling back in love with photography: Balloon shadows have color

2ndplace…………………………………

Fell in love with this photo as soon as I saw it. The light is perfect. The way the light is coming in and beaming on the mother’s glow is sweet perfection. The arrows on the curtains really add to the dimension of the photo and the rays on the mother’s body are almost mimicking the arrows. Such a beautiful capture. Congratulations Katie on a photo that not only captures the beauty in breastfeeding, but the idea that you shouldn’t have to hide in the shadows to do so. Bravo.

3rdplace…………………………………

Love, love, love this photo! The texture is what first drew the eyes in. Then the shadows mixed with this color palette are just beautiful. Love how the light source from the sun has a bright, but subtle beam that comes in and draws you right to his face. The direction of the airplane too, to the sun, is fantastic. A beautiful photo all around. Congratulations Andrea!

This photo has such a “city” feel to it. This is one of those photos that really makes you feel that you are there, that you are people watching in the bus terminal. You look at this man and wonder what he is thinking, where he is going, and if he has had a tough life or a good one. Love the statue above him, the placement is perfect! The editing of this photo is really what makes it. It really draws you straight to his face and the cigarette in his mouth. Great image Sunil! Congratulations on telling a fabulous story through a photo!

5/52 {shadows}..
I noticed this person yesterday. He was all by himself, enjoying his cigarette in peace amidst the busy hustle and bustle of people around the bus terminal in NYC. Only two people were still at this moment..my subject and myself. His life has a story behind it. How would you interpret this?
There were two images that were right up there with the top 4. Darla’s image is so beautiful. The lighting, the curtains, the shadows and her daughter playing with her Pink Bunny is so lovely. It makes you wonder what kind of adventures they go on during the day.

I have a personal project this year. Documenting the everyday adventures of our daughter, and her lovey, Pink Bunny. She will be 7 soon, and I know that the ‘window’ for catching moments like this is closing. Until then, I watch her innocence and capture it wherever I can!
Jennifer’s image is the other photo right up there with the others. The creative idea is brilliant and the execution is great! This is a photo she will always treasure! Would love to see a series of these images, would be so fun!

There is one window in my house where the sunlight comes in perfectly through the blinds and on to my figures in the afternoon. Today I tried to focus the light on the two most imortant parts of this figure, on her eyes and on the tip of her blade. With shadows surrounding those two focal points, I couldn’t be happier.

I’ve worn this necklace during many infinite moments in my life, including my entire pregnancy (my wedding rings dangled from it when my fingers became too swollen to wear them), her birth, & through the dark postpartum depression that enveloped me.
Today, she asked to wear it & I took it off for the first time in I don’t know how long & she laid down in this beautiful light in the kitchen & I think my heart may have exploded.

I walked past and saw this sweet moment. That light! The connection between my girl and her puppy! The shredded cheese she’s using to “train” her puppy. Wait, what? On a side note, cleaning that glass is an exercise in futility.

This is Molly, our crazy 6 year old Australian Shepherd, who is impossible to tire out. She is an enthusiastic fetcher and is convinced that anyone that visits our home has come for the sole purpose of throwing the frisbee or the ball for her. 🙂

Life in 52/Week 5 (Shadows):

Late at night I was still reading while my husband was already asleep I realized that my bedside lamp produced a lovely shadow on this little statue – two lovers that I bought for our first wedding anniversary. I only needed to a adjust it a little bit, to let the shadow stick out a bit more.

Wk 5/52 Shadows.

This was a color image, but I covered it to black and white, and used some dodge and burn and a overlay filter. Her eye lashes the shadow they cast were amazing, this was from a runway fashion show.

our “spotlight artist” this week is:
Elizabeth is a fabulous photographer. Every photo she takes tells a story and makes you want to see more of her work and sweet family. Be on the lookout this week as we highlight some of Elizabeth’s work and a Q&A session about her colorful life in Tacoma, Washington. Another fantastic week! This has been such a great project so far. While we are only in Week 6, can’t wait to see how the rest of the year progresses. Thank you for your commitment to the project and keep up the great work! This week’s theme is a little different. We have 3! You can choose which theme you want, or you can use all 3! Week 6’s theme is “from the heart”, “i and love and you” (a shout out to the Avett Brothers) and “my valentine” (a more traditional theme for the week) Happy shooting everyone and if you need help with inspiration, just ask! xo

Wow, thank you so much for choosing my image as #2! This is such a huge compliment :D! I almost didn’t post the image because of the subject matter, but I’m really glad that I did.
